MODERN SLAVERY

MODERN SLAVERY

Modern slavery is a significant and complex human rights issue which challenges us as a Catholic community to respond with the kind of love of neighbour illustrated by the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 – 37).

Modern slavery is a crime in Australia. It is the severe exploitation of other people for personal or commercial gain: bonded labour, deceptive recruitment practices, domestic servitude, forced marriage, human trafficking, worst forms of child labour.

MODERN SLAVERY INITIATIVE

The Initiative has three projects:

  1. Eradicating the risk of modern slavery in the procurement practices of West Australian chanceries as a voluntary response to the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth)
  2. Encouraging ethical purchasing behaviours in parishes
  3. Educating clergy marriage celebrants about forced marriage, canon law and legislative requirements.
